How to Tell if Your Honey is Pure

From the water test to the flame test- simple ways to check honey purity at home and why crystallisation is a sign of quality.

With honey adulteration becoming increasingly common, knowing how to spot pure honey is a valuable skill. Here are some simple tests you can do at home.

The Water Test: Drop a spoonful of honey into a glass of water. Pure honey will settle at the bottom without dissolving easily. Adulterated honey will start to dissolve and cloud the water.

The Thumb Test: Place a small drop of honey on your thumb. Pure honey stays intact and doesn't spread or drip quickly. If it spreads immediately, it may contain added water or sugar syrup.

The Flame Test: Dip a dry matchstick in honey and try to strike it. Pure honey has low moisture content, so the match should light easily. If it doesn't light, the honey may have been diluted with water.

The Crystallisation Test: Real honey crystallises over time — this is completely natural and actually a sign of purity. If your honey never crystallises even after months, it may have been heavily processed or adulterated.

Remember, no home test is 100% conclusive. The best way to ensure purity is to buy from trusted sources who are transparent about their sourcing and processing methods.
